Rome Gelato Shops You Can’t Miss!

I was lucky enough to have spent a semester studying abroad in Rome. Over the course of those five months, I devoured countless scoops of gelato, meticulously documenting each flavor I encountered.  I can confidently say I tried A LOT of different places and narrowed it down to my two favorites. I would say it is hard to find bad gelato in Rome, but the below recs are the absolute best!

PRO TIP: Avoid gelato shops with overflowing mounds in containers. If you see gelato piled high and exposed, it could be a sign of improper storage and temperature control, as well as being whipped too much with air bubbles.

1. Frigidarium

Via del Governo Vecchio, 112, 00186 Roma, Italy: 5 minute walk from Piazza Navona

This is my personal favorite. They do have a variety of flavors, but when you go here you have to just order the house flavor.  I definitely tried many other flavors, but nothing compares to Frigidarium.  If you are a chocolate lover (like me) you can also ask for them to dip it in chocolate. You can thank me later 😉

2. Giolitti

Via degli Uffici del Vicario, 40, 00186 Roma, Italy:  4 minute walk from the Pantheon, and about an 8 minute walk from the Trevi Fountain

Giolitti is probably the creamiest gelato in Rome. My brother was making fun of me and calling me a gelato snob, but once he had a scoop of pistachio at Giolitti he understood how amazing this place is. I mean just look at that joy pictured above. As for the best flavors, literally anything you order here will be delicious. My only recommendation is trying as many flavors as you can.

I hope you enjoy your stay in my favorite city, and I can’t wait to hear about what flavors of gelato you ate!
