Ultimate Food Guide to Zagreb

One of the best parts of traveling is the food, and Zagreb has such an amazing food scene! I have broken this list down into three categories: Croatian, international and brunch spots. Please let me know what you think or if I missed any of your favorite restaurants!

CROATIAN

If you are trying to have local cuisine you have to order ćevapčići (Balkan meat dish) and štrukli (which is basically like a doughy lasagna filled with different flavors, both sweet and savory).

La Štruk: Skalinska ul. 5, 10000, Zagreb, Croatia
This is your place for štrukli. I cannot tell you how many I ate over the course of a year. My top flavor is red pepper and truffle as a close second. If you are going with a group of people I recommend ordering a couple and trying different types including a sweet one like apple cinnamon or blueberry.

Plac Kitchen & Grill: Dolac 2, 10000, Zagreb, Croatia
Although the name doesn’t sound super Croatian, this place has the best ćevapčići, and the locals will tell you that too. Make sure you also order it with Kajmak (creamy cheese) and Ajvar (red pepper spread) and just LOAD IT UP on your ćevapi.

Konoba Didov san: Mletačka ul. 11, 10000, Zagreb, Croatia
The ambience in here is much nicer than Plac and it also serves such amazing Croatian food. The ćevapi is very good but honestly everything here is delicious.

HERITAGE: Petrinjska ul. 14, 10000, Zagreb, Croatia
This is one of my favorites because it is Croatian food with a modern/street food vibe. The employees also give you a run down of where all the local ingredients came from which is a nice touch.

Trilogija: Kamenita ul. 5, 10000, Zagreb, Croatia
This place is a bit pricey, especially for Zagreb standards, but the menu changes daily and all of the dishes are served from ingredients they bought at the market that day. So this makes for really fresh and unique dishes.

INTERNATIONAL

Curry Bowl: Ul. Ivana Tkalčića 44, 10000, Zagreb, Croatia
Located on the best street in Zagreb, is this Sri Lankan restaurant. Really delicious flavors and unique dishes, while also being a great spot for people watching at the outside tables.

Submarine Burgers: Bogovićeva ul. 7, 10000, Zagreb, Croatia
Zagreb actually has a crazy good burger scene and there are a couple of great spots but nothing compares to Submarines. There are a few different locations but this one is closest to the main square. Every burger I have tried here is delicious and if you are a truffle fan you HAVE to order the truffle fries. Probably one of my favorite things I ate in Zagreb and I will for sure be back for them again.

Burger with truffle fries!

Ginger Sushi: Masarykova ul. 21, 10000, Zagreb, Croatia
This was my go to place for sushi. It is ridiculously inexpensive and tasty. The dishes come in to-go boxes so it is great to grab and take to a park.

BASTA: Varšavska ul. 5, 10000, Zagreb, Croatia
Best pizza in Zagreb. Nuff said.

BRUNCH

The American in me loves a good brunch and Zagreb does not disappoint! Below are some of my favorites.

EGGSPRESS: Amruševa ul. 4, 10000, Zagreb, Croatia
I was obsessed with this place when I lived in Zagreb. My favorite dishes were the Shakshuka and the Eggs Benedict.

Otto & Frank: Ul. Ivana Tkalčića 20, 10000, Zagreb, Croatia
Good eggs. Good coffee. Good prices.

Nutelino: Vlaška ul. 10, 10000, Zagreb, Croatia
Right around the corner from the cathedral is your go to pancake and crepe shop. Nutelino serves giant portions with so many options for toppings!

Dobar tek!
