What Is A Digital Nomad and How To Become One

When all you need is a strong Wi-Fi connection to get your work done – why don’t you live where ever you want?

In the midst of COVID, and being trapped in my apartment, I knew that once “this thing” was over, I needed to get out. As someone who has always been passionate about travel, I knew I needed to find a job that would allow me to work wherever I wanted. That’s when I discovered the liberating world of being a digital nomad.

But what exactly is a digital nomad?

A digital nomad is someone who is location independent and can complete their work from anywhere in the world. Gone are the days of being tied to a specific office or city. With just a laptop and a reliable internet connection, the possibilities are endless.

And, this doesn’t mean you have to go off and start your own business or freelance.  One positive outcome of the pandemic was companies realizing employees can productively work without being in an office.  Although, some organizations have gone back to work, there are loads of companies who have shifted to fully remote or hybrid options.

I work as a typical full-time marketing manager in a corporate America role, but I found an organization that allows me to work from anywhere.  The past 2.5 years, I have traveled across 4 continents (soon 5) and dozens of countries (see map) – all while receiving a regular paycheck, benefits and insurance.

So who can become a digital nomad?
The short answer is anyone.  It truly depends on how badly you want it and what you are willing to sacrifice. Of course there are some career paths that tend to make it easier to work remotely.  I typically meet lots of software engineers, fellow marketers, consultants and copywriters.  But I have also met former teachers, therapists and nurses etc. who switched careers (even just temporarily) to something digital so they can travel full time while still making money.
How to find a remote job?
Because of the pandemic most job posting websites (LinkedInIndeed, etc.) have a filter for remote jobs. Simply click that button, and you’re instantly presented with a range of remote positions. Use these filters to streamline your search and zero in on roles that match your skill set.  I personally found my role via LinkedIn, but you can also check out dedicated sites like RemoteOK, FlexJobs, and We Work Remotely. These platforms cater specifically to those seeking remote opportunities, offering a no-nonsense way to explore jobs across various industries. By leveraging these platforms and filters, aspiring digital nomads can unlock a world of possibilities and embark on a journey that combines professional growth with the freedom to explore diverse corners of the globe.
And finally…

Be patient.  It took me almost 7 months to find a job that gives me this much flexibility. When I started this role, I thought I was only going to nomad for 1 year, but here I am approaching 3 years and I could not be happier.  I promise it will be worth it 🙂
