Why You Have to Study Abroad

I knew when I started college that I would want to do a semester abroad. However, at the time I did not realize what a significant impact it would have on my life. I did one incredible semester in Rome during my sophomore year. When I arrived back home I just felt like it was not enough time. Post graduation, I worked a full year while living at my parents. Although it was not an ideal situation it allowed me to save enough money to do my masters abroad. I spent the next year in Zagreb, Croatia studying for my MBA.
I have learned so much about myself living in a different country. I became more independent and confident in myself. It gave me the courage to walk into any situation without feeling nervous or scared of the outcome. Studying abroad was hands-down the best decision I have ever made.
If you still aren’t convinced read the responses of 9 others who also had life-changing experiences below.

“My time studying in Egypt taught me how different this world really is and how life is so much greater than ourselves. It gave me a taste of how fun it can be to learn new languages, views, customs and histories.”
Rosie, American, Studied in Egypt

“Do whatever it takes to study abroad. I don’t think anything in my life shaped me the way living in another country for four months did. I have spent every year since plotting a way to live in Europe again, but visiting will have to do for now.”
Lizzie, American, Studied in Italy

“Studying abroad is not only experiencing a new country, it is experiencing a new way of learning with different and sometimes difficult circumstances. There are new teachers, new people, different food & culture, and an unfamiliar living situation, but it is absolutely worth it. The experience you will have and the friendships you make is unbeatable. It helps you grow because you are out of your comfort zone. It also allows you to recognize and appreciate the differences between your own and your exchange country. I encourage everyone to experience some time abroad as it is going to be the best time of your life!”
Tobi, German, Studied in England

“Fresh out of high school I decided to do my study abroad in Pamplona, Spain. What was originally going to be one year turned into eight! Spain stole my heart and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It was a wonderful experience that resulted in me learning another language, pursuing a degree in nursing and ultimately working in a Medical ICU! I cannot emphasis the importance of study abroad programs and how they will change your life!”
Cristina, American, Studied in Spain

More than crossing off countries from your list of ‘must-sees’, study abroad is one of the best ways to learn about the world around you, while also learning about yourself. While you’re abroad you’ll make plans to see parts of the world you never dreamed of seeing. Experience the cultures there, maybe even celebrate a holiday in a different way than you’re used to. Seeing and experiencing all of these things is not only an amazing sight, but also helps you understand the world around you in a better way. It makes you realize how big the world is, and how much there is to learn. There’s a world full of millions of people, doing millions of things you’ve never done before, and studying abroad is one way to see those amazing things. The best part is, once you start traveling you can’t stop. Hopefully one day, you’ll end up seeing almost every part of the world.

“Study abroad taught me how to be comfortable with being alone. It taught me how to navigate new places by myself without speaking the same language as the people who live there and without internet at all times. It brought me a sense of fearlessness that I had never had before. Through studying abroad I learned how to take risks and try new things that at first seemed scary (such as moving to a new country without a set place to live 😬). I also learned very practical things such as how to budget, how to navigate foreign public transportation systems, and how to manage my time. My education through study abroad was very unique as well as there were drastic differences in terms of what Irish Universities expect from their students compared to the U.S. as well as how grades are determined. This took some time and effort as I was used to the schooling system that I had been part of for over 14 years and I had to reconfigure my style of being a student to succeed in a different country’s education system. The experience I had made me evaluate a lot about myself and instilled in me a courage and perseverance that I did not have before.”
Anne, American, Studied in Ireland

“I studied abroad in Granada, Spain for two months one summer. It was not enough time to really immerse myself into the culture and language. I promised myself that after graduating I would spend at least a year in another country, and so I volunteered in Ecuador. It was the most life-changing experience I have had.”
Rosey, American, Studied in Spain

“There’s so much to be said about studying abroad but I think overall I’d say that I’m so incredibly grateful for the experience and proud of myself for prioritizing a semester abroad as I planned my college schedule. I think so many people choose not to study abroad because of personal relationships and the fear of missing out at home but if you have the opportunity, it’s so worth every sacrifice…and the relationships at home that really matter will be just fine. Studying abroad brought me to friends and new levels of confidence and independence that I may have never achieved in my usual setting where I’m surrounded by the people, places, and culture that I’m so familiar with. It broadens every perspective and is too much fun to pass up (again, if the opportunity is there!)”
Kristy, American, Studied in France
